We hold information on various organisations offering support to families with a disabled child/children. Coping with CHAOS is a parent-led organisation, all of the office staff, and many of our play workers and volunteers are either the parents of, or siblings of children with a disability or additional need. As such, we are well aware of the joys and challenges that this can present, and we aim to offer support to parents through the difficult times as well as celebrating the achievements of our children.Jak_Bennett_-6883

We also provide a family support service where parents of disabled children themselves volunteer to support other parents and make positive adjustments to their life. Our family supporters know what it is like to cope with a new diagnosis and can offer support parent to parent, or via phone or email.  The service is free and confidential and we offer support to parents of children with any disability or additional needs. Families new to Coping with CHAOS will receive a home visit from a family supporter initially and also a information pack providing information on all services they can access in their local authority area.

What we offer

Coffee morning/drop in for parents and carers

Held at our centre in West Moors between 10am and 12pm the first Monday of the month during term time. Enjoy some refreshments, have a chat, find out information and have access to the toy library, resource room, ball pond, toys and sensory room. Themed sessions also take place to help parents with specific issues they wish to be addressed.

Come along to our next CHAOS coffee morning. Find out the dates here. Contact Chris Faulder at Coping with CHAOS to book on as space is limited.

Toy/book library

Our toy and book library is available to parents registered with CHOAS. There is a small charge for each individual toy or book borrowed from 50p to £1.50 depending on the value of the item. Monies raised will be used to buy new toys/books and replace damaged or unreturned stock. The toy/book library will be available at our monthly coffee mornings, but parents are welcome to drop in at any time to borrow, subject to the office being open. We would be very grateful for donations of unwanted toys or books which are in good condition and suitable for lending to others.

As a community of parents we have a lot of accumulated experience, which we are happy to share, what we will not do is give advice or try to influence a parent’s decision. If you have a query, please feel free to give the office a call.

Resource room

Our resource room is available to parents during office hours. It houses our toy/book library as well as lots of other information from advocacy to youth clubs. Parents are free to drop in and browse. A photocopying service is available at 5p per sheet.

Sibling support

Those siblings with a disabled brother or sister require support and the team are on hand to provide advice to them when required. Coping with CHAOS is applying for funding to provide sibling only sessions and workshops so they can discuss and listen to topics that could be of interest to them.

Feedback about the family support service

“The family support service provided me with the confidence to open up. I’d just been putting on a brave face until I got the support I needed from Chaos.”

“The service gives a listening ear to parents, shows real empathy and understanding of not only the child’s needs but also the needs of the parents.”

“The service has a wealth of knowledge and experience which is demonstrated when supporting parents.  The team has made a significant difference, providing an impartial listening ear.”

“Before this I was feeling isolated and depressed.  The service gave me a chance to speak to another parent who knew what I was going through.  I have grown more confident and want to explore the world more with my son.”
