This week, 12 men and women will be setting off on a life changing challenge in aid of Dorset’s disability charity, Diverse Abilities. From Saturday 20 to Wednesday 24 September the group of individuals will be taking part in a five-day survival event – the Castaway Challenge.
The five-day adventure contains fundamental elements of survival, which will challenge participants from dusk until dawn. During the event those involved will learn all there is to know about survival techniques, build a natural team shelter, undertake sea life-raft survival skills training, learn to navigate by sun and stars and take part in search and rescue drills, plus much more!
The challenge begins with a bonding night at the Bay View Hotel, part of the Quantum Group which also includes the Cottonwood Boutique, Ocean View and Total Health Studio Fitnessology, where all those taking part can get to know each other before heading out to the secret location on boats, kindly sponsored and supplied by Powerboat Training UK and Poole Boat Hire.
Ali, 37, from Octopus Personnel, a privately owned recruitment agency in Bournemouth, was the first participant to sign up to the Castaway Challenge. She said: “I can’t wait to take part in the Diverse Abilities survival challenge! I am obsessed with ‘I am a celebrity… get me out of here’ and I thought this would be the closest I would get to taking part, as I am not quite a celebrity yet! I am very excited to be taking part and putting myself into a situation that is out of my comfort zone. It will be an experience I will never forget.”
Sharon Wells, Events Fundraiser at Diverse Abilities, said: “The Castaway ‘five-day’ Challengeis a once in a lifetime opportunity those taking part will be helping us to make a difference to the lives of children and adults with learning difficulties and profound physical disabilities. We’d like to say a massive thank you to this year’s event sponsors – Cottonwood Boutique Hotel, Ocean View Hotel, Total Health Studio, Powerboat Training UK, Poole Boat Hire and Cobbs Quay Marina.”
If you are interested in taking part in next year’s event, entry is £50 and minimum sponsorship is £550 per person. Diverse Abilities provide full support to every participant who signs up to the event, to help them achieve their fundraising target.
